Out of Season - Bob Beagrie

Out of Season

The sea, desperate, is trying
to snatch the legs of the Indian lady
on the slip, rearing to sweep her
out over skerries, she's

egging it on with laughter,
snapping selfies with spitting horses
trampling wild across pebble dunes
as the next wave scrabbles,

clutches, lashes her ankles,
sends her skipping toward the safe
promenade of boats resting between tides,
squawking at bleakness,

at the numbing caress of a forlorn
tragedy, old as the sea, the shrill cry
of a lone black headed gull gliding
from fret-bound turbines.
